Research In Motion reports its fiscal first quarter results on Thursday, and analysts are decidedly gloomy about the company's prospects. The big questions: did RIM's PlayBook tablet launch deliver sales momentum and did that device suck too much wind out of development for other products? Reading through the research notes on RIM is a bit epressing. RIM isn't Nokia, but analysts are frustrated by the company's delayed products. RIM's Bold 9900 may not ship until September, and four more devices based on the BlackBerry OS 7, which used to be known as OS 6.1, may ot

ship until November. At its BlackBerry World conference, RIM had talked about a June or July ship date. At a time when RIM should be taking away Nokia's market share it is trying to get much ballyhooed smartphones to market. Without those devices, RIM is in limbo on the revenue front. And the later those devices come, the more likely RIM's "superphones," devices based on the QNX operating system, will slip further into 2012. Morgan Stanley analyst Ehud Gelblum says RIM is mired in a "continued product vacuum."

In other words, analysts will be closely monitoring RIM executives and trying to read the product tea leaves. As for the quarter, Wall Street has already factored in a disappointment. Analysts are expecting earnings of $1.32 a share on revenue of $5.15 billion following RIM's recent profit warning. Gelblum didn't mince words. He said in a research note: We believe RIM has now squandered nearly every opportunity and competitive advantage it enjoyed through ineffective R&D resource management, delayed product launches and misreads of the ompetitive environment. With the 9900 launch now likely pushed out til Sept, the remaining BB7 phones now likely just launching in Oct/Nov, and new Playbook models on the way, we believe RIM may have run out of R&D capacity to launch its QNX handset in the CQ1/ FQ4 timeframe it was shooting for.

Among the key items to watch for RIM: PlayBook sales. Morgan Stanley is expecting RIM to ship 400,000 PlayBooks in the first quarter and then projects another 700,000 in the second quarter due to international market expansion. In other words, the PlayBook won't be the iPad, but will have a respectable showing. CIBC analyst Todd Coupland is also projecting sales of 400,000 PlayBooks. Coupland added: ur view is the PlayBook is a very good product and in spite of a

"sloppy launch." PB appears to have been booking steady sales. Sales above 300,000 units are likely to be viewed as a positive. When are these new smartphones shipping? Coupland said:To date, we have only seen scattered blog commentary that RIM's new products will be delayed for the critical back-to-school selling period. We would like RIM to

clarify or at least give some indication as to the progress of major carrier launch dates in order to legitimize the Q2 and F2012 shipment outlook. It would also quicken and improve the ability for RIM to take market share from the struggling Nokia. Details about these new phones would be nice too. RIM has demonstrated the Touch Bold, but the touch-

screen Curve and Torch II are largely mysteries. These details would reveal whether RIM can be ompetitive with the likes of Apple and HTC as well as continue its international momentum. Can RIM defend international markets? RIM will take the PlayBook to the international markets where the BlackBerry is strong. ship 13.5 million smartphones and that sum is largely in line with the consensus. The problem is that RIM is falling ehind on smartphones--specially in North America. William Blair analyst Anil Doradla said: Our latest round of channel checks across North America continue to indicate that RIM is losing market share. Relative to three months ago,

the market has become more competitive, with pressure from Android (now including several LTE devices) and continued strength china manufacturing from Apple spreading to Verizon. As a result, RIM did not have a smartphone in the top three position at any of the four major  North American operators. Additionally, during the quarter RIM saw significant price cuts at AT&T and Sprint.

Across the board, our checks continue to indicate that sales reps are de-emphasizing the sale of RIM devices, and there is an increasing perception of the brand becoming an "e-mail-only device" designed for the business user.Indeed, Doradla's channel checks on RIM are downright alarming at U.S. carriers. At Verizon, the top three phones ere pple's iPhone, HTC's Thunderbolt, and Samsung Droid Charge. At AT&T, the iPhone, HTC Inspire, and Samsung Infuse were the top three. Sprint was led by Samsung's Epic 4G, HTC's Evo and Google's Nexus S. T-Mobile's top three phones were the Samsung Galaxy S, T-Mobile G2x, and MyTouch 4G. All of those carriers as recently as December had IM devices in the top three spots.

Ever since a brave adventurer rediscovered Runecrafting, mages from the Wizards' Tower have been working hard to figure out its intricacies. In fact, so many have been drawn to Runecrafting's secrets that a guild has formed.

Not everything is rosy and happy in the guild. An argument has raged over the magical reaction that creates rune stones: are green or yellow orbs more important in the process? Agree to resolve their conflict and you'll find yourself in our newest minigame, The Great Orb Project!

The purpose of this team-based minigame is very simple: collect more coloured orbs than the opposing team. Watch out, though, as they will be pushing your orbs out of the way to stop you winning. This frenetic minigame offers few rules and a great alternative to conventional Runecrafting - all with a range of rewards, of course. Expect rune essence, Runecrafting XP and new magical equipment if you wipe the floor with your opponents.

The Runecrafting Guild also offers a number of features that are not tied to the minigame. The rune altar map helpfully shows the location of all altars; one mad wizard has learned how to repair abyssal pouches; and the head of the guild is working on a marvellous omni-talisman that combines the powers of all existing talismans into one.

Note that the guild is available to both free players and members - the Runecrafters want all the help they can get!

Beyond the Runecrafting Guild, this update brings you a few small things that should make your lives easier...

Kazgar, Mistag and Dartog have been given right-click options so you can quickly ask them to guide you through the Lumbridge Swamp Caves. Elkoy, the guide from the Tree Gnome Village maze, has been given a similar option.

When you previously right-clicked on a chat message from another player, you were always offered the option to 'Add friend' and 'Add ignore'. If that player was already on your Friends list, those options weren't very useful, so we've replaced them with a new 'Message' option. This is identical to what would happen if you clicked on your friend in your Friends List. (This is not available on Quick Chat-only worlds.)

Tai Bwo Wannai village welcomes its newest arrival, Imiago. If you've completed Jungle Potion, he'll be willing to protect your calquat trees from disease in exchange for eight poison ivy berries.

Phil "Ralphedelominius" Comeau and I ducked into the Midway Games area at E3 for a chance to talk about Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar and to

preview the game's next free update, Book 10, which will be coming some time in August. Developed by Turbine and published in North America by Midway, LotRO

launched in late April of 2007.

First we chatted with Adam Mersky, Director of Public Relations for Turbine. Mersky was affable and eager to talk about
Lotro, despite the fact that we were just chatting to pass the time until the demo station was available. We talked a

bit about what Mersky called Chicken Play (more on that in a moment), and some of the other goodies that would be coming to LotRO soon.

"In the fall we're going to be looking at housing again," Mersky said. "I don't have many details to give you, though." He mentioned that the team was still

finalizing housing details, but that Turbine would possibly hold an event in the fall to "give people a preview."

Will housing be instanced? Mersky couldn't say. He did say, "We can't have tract housing in the Shire!" Then he laughed and added, "We're thinking that in

the way a character has slots, housing will also have a vault with slots. You can earn stuff, say a carpet, and then you'd put it in your carpet slot and it

would show up in the room."

Mersky seemed excited about the upcoming content in Book 10. "I think Book 10 is going to be a real big deal," he said. "Whereas Book 9 was all about big

open spaces and adding 10% more to the game, Book 10 will be smaller scale but will add new features and lots of new quests."

Phil Comeau commented that Lord of the Rings Online is one of just two games that he's still actively playing. "You know, that's the ultimate compliment,

right? When I talk to gaming journalists who usually review a game and move on, and they're still playing, that's huge."

"Well, I've hit a plateau around level 20 that I'm not too happy about..." Phil mused.

"Maybe you're like me, though," Mersky said, "and you're just taking your time and running around doing all the quests and such. You know, there's grind in

every game if you play it that way. Sometimes you've got to stop and smell the roses...enjoy the ride."

Without a segue, Mersky added, "I think Lotro gold has really raised the bar for quality. You can't come out and not be

polished. You have to remember it's not just the game, it's the service." He went on to make an example of Vanguard: Saga of Heroes, referring to the way the

game's bugs and sluggish performance at launch caused subscriber numbers to drop dramatically.

"This is our Vanguard person," Comeau laughed, pointing at me. (I responded, "Guilty!")

"Ah, well but it's not that way...we learn from each other; we're not at war with each other," Mersky said.

At about this time the demo station opened up and we were introduced to Allan Maki, Content Designer for Turbine. It was clear from the get-go that Maki is

excited about lotro, because his enthusiasm for the game is palpable. He started off by showing us the entrance to the

city of Annúminas, which will be entirely opened to players in Book 10. Players entering Annúminas will arrive in a war zone, complete with scripted battles

to engage them in the unfolding storyline.

Maki also showed off session play (SP). Coming with Book 10, players will have the ability to spend Destiny Points for the opportunity to play a ranger, a

troll, or a chicken for a period of time. First we saw the ranger. Picture one of Aragorn's bretheren clad in fancy, ranger-esque armor. Then we saw the

trolls, who have massive AoE capabilities. "AoE is how they fight, and they do it well," said Maki, demonstrating the troll's ability to throw boulders and

damage multiple enemies at once.

And finally, we saw the chicken. We asked if chicken play was instanced, and Maki told us that it was not. In fact, chickens run in the world at large.

"You're a free range chicken!" Maki joked. "And one of the benefits of being a chicken is you run faster. Just imagine a couple groups of players all turning

chicken. You'd have a herd of speedy chickens coming at you over the hill."

Maki explained how players start in The Shire and complete deeds to earn the destiny points necessary for chicken play. He showed us a chicken engaged in

battle. The chicken was able to play possum. She also used an attack called Biting Shrew and another skill called Threatening Cluck. "This is really for a

touch of humor and fun," Maki said, "But there is a whole big quest line here with chicken play."

Maki talked briefly about bartering and showed us the bartering window. Essentially, players will be able to trade certain goods (instead of coins) with

special vendor NPCs.

Another feature coming to Book 10 is the Reputation System. Reputation is a means of gaining faction with certain NPC groups within the game either,

apparently by killing their enemies and completing quests. Earning their favor grants special rewards. "It's basically another way to advance your

character," Maki said. New public (non-instanced) dungeons will be opened up for questing related to the reputation system.

Maki also hinted at some raid content coming with Book 11, and said the community could expect an announcement very soon.

Attractive graphics, reasonable system requirements, solid gameplay dynamics and an unbeatable brand combine to make Lotro gold one of the hottest MMO titles available. And with free updates coming at a rapid pace it's clear that Turbine is committed to keeping Lord of the
